Statement

My work investigates the physical world as it vacillates between raw materials and known objects, and how these transformations intersect with lived experience. I am drawn to objects and materials that are easy to overlook or discard yet are widely familiar and used on a daily basis. The physical connections between materials have also become increasingly important to me: a single sculpture may consiste of materials and objects that are tied, welded, glued, stitched, stapled, stacked, or joined together in less than obvious ways. Much of the work explores the tensions between fixed meanings and the emotional states that arise when meaning shifts. I'm interested not only in the cultural significance ascribed to objects, but also in how their meanings change over time and become entangled in the messy stuff of our personal lives. My studio practice includes not only sculptures but also drawings and writing. With each body of work I've included a selection of each that further explores some of the associations between individual pieces.
